Biography Karen Napaljarri Barnes was born in Lajamanu, a remote Aboriginal community in semi-arid country on the edge of the Tanami Desert 1000km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. She moved to Yuendumu, 700km south, after finishing school in Lajamanu, to be with her family.

Karen Napaljarri Barnes is the latest sensation in Aboriginal Art to emerge from Warlukurlangku Artists of Yuendumu. Karen now in her twenties has been painting since the age of eleven, guided by her grandmother Judy Napangardi Watson. The daughter of Susie Watson she established a close bond with her grandmother who encourages her painting.
