New Brighton Block takes 1912 building to new heights Edmonton Journal

For years, the three-storey red brick and limestone building, later known as the Brighton Block, was one of the most iconic commercial buildings on Jasper Avenue, a symbol of Edmonton's first.

It is one of a group of buildings constructed before the First World War and part of Edmonton's first development boom. Known also as the Brown Block, the building was erected in two symmetrical sections and cost about $30,000. Built of brick and steel with stone dressings to decorate the 33 foot frontage, the block was designed by James Henderson.

While it is still early days in terms of Jasper Ave's return to glory, moves such as this will hopefully go a long way towards bringing the city around to the notion that there is something special about Edmonton's historic city centre.
